A swift summer wind had carried away most of the heat. Hundreds of fellow cyclists poured out of the gym like ants before a rain. We were excited to continue our trip across Kansas with such nice weather.
Once my family had our bikes prepared and our helmets（头盔）on, we took off , cycling at a regular pace, one behind the other. Soon the community started to come alive . Business men hurriedly headed for their offices and farmers turned aside their trucks around us. A few honked（按喇叭）, some waved and others just drove by as if we weren't even there.
Our route soon lead to the countryside, and the scene turned from the town to wide-open wheat fields. The golden-brown heads of grain were bent, signaling the harvest was about to begin.
As we continued, we began to see grasslands filled with cattle. The young calves anxiously watched us ride by as they gathered near their mothers. gradually , the grasslands become hillier, and we entered the Flint Hills. Small rocks stood out of the short, green grass throughout the grassland.
The road ahead changed, too, as we went. The muscles in my legs started to ache as I slowed down to make it up hills. Each bend seemed a greater difficulty than the last, but the hard work finally paid off when I sped down the backside of the bend. The cool wind strongly pushed my shirt against me as I hit 30 miles per hour. The scene was a shadow from the corner of my eye as I focused on the road. I was at the bottom in a short time it took me to get up the bend.
