Elle is a foreign student who came to China.She got along well with her classmates in a few days.One day,she was talking with Gao Qian about the western culture.
G:I am interested in foreign festivals.I have learnt about that Christmas is in memory of the birth of Jesus.I want to know more about other festivals,can you tell me more?
E:Of course.Expect Christmas,Easter is also a popular festival.
G:Oh,I have heard little about it.It is a religious festival for Christians around the world.
E:Yes.The morning starts with music and the music impel(驱使) Christians go to churches,parks or squares to welcome the Easter’s morning and to be in honour of the return of Jesus from the dead.
G:Wow,it sounds heavenly(神圣的) and maybe the music can make people comfortable.How about Thanksgiving Day?Once I read a book about festivals which said that Thanksgiving Day was a tradition festival.
E:You’re right.Thanksgiving Day is on the 4th Thursday in November every year.It has an interesting and complicated(复杂的) history.But I think you might long to know some about its customs.
G:You’re so clever.So what do people do to celebrate the Thanksgiving Day?
E:People often salute(放礼炮)and hold religious ceremonial(仪式) with turkeys,pumpkins,potatoes and coins to show their thanks to the god.
G:It can be wonderful and interesting.On the other hand,the etiquette (礼仪) in China is different from western.
E:Maybe I can tell you something about “thank you”.You should say “thank you” to anybody who help you,though he is your boss or employee.But you can’t say it after your speech.
G:If somebody say “thank you” to me,what can I do?
E:Just smile to him or her is ok.
G:It is little different from Chinese.
E:Yes.But if you want to give someone your respect(问候某人),don’t say “Where have you been” and so on,which will make them think that you’re asking about their privacy(隐私).
B:But that is in accordance with etiquette(合乎礼节) in China.
E:If you say “Have you had your dinner”,others might think that you’re inviting him to have a dinner with you.And if you are invited,you ought to answer those who invite you.
G:It’s quite difficult for me to get used to following your etiquettes.But I think “Lady first” is a good behavior for Chinese to learn.
E:The chivalry（骑士精神）of the middle ages(中世纪) had a big effect in western countries,so people still follow “Lady first” in order to show their respect to ladies.
G:What do people do to show their respect?
E:When a lady and a man get on a car,the man always opens the door for the lady and uses his hand to protect the lady’s head.Usually,the man lets the lady sit on the right when they sit together.When they are walking in the streets,the man often walks in the side which beside the road.
G:And only when the man solve problem or be easy to take care of the lady,he can stand in front of her.
E:Yes,that’s right.
