Orion was a great hunter who had a tendency to boast a lot.One day,he was bragging to Artemis and her mother Leto that he could kill any and every animal on Earth.To put him in his place the two godesses sent a scorpion to fight him.The battle ended in Orion's death and Zeus put the scorpion in the heavens as a constellation to remind us to be humble.
Later the scorpion in the sky had an influence on Phaeton's story.Phaeton was the son of Helios,the god who drives the sun chariot.Phaeton decided one day that he really wanted to try driving the chariot,so he begged and pleaded until his father finally let him.Or,sometimes the story is told that he stole the chariot during the night while the moon was out and his father was resting.Anyway,the horses were too wild for him to control and he went too high in the sky,where he saw the scorpion.Scared,he drove the chariot down as fast as he could and got too close to Earth.He accidentally turned half of Africa into a desert and burned the skin of the Ethiopian nation until it was black.Eventually,Zeus had to strike the chariot with a lightning bolt to get it to stop.
