According to the February 3rd report of the Australian Meteorological Department, cyclone Yasi crossed the coastal region of Northern Queensland at midnight February 2nd; it created tidal storm surges, wrecked buildings and public facilities, and caused power loss to extensive areas. Considered to be the most ferocious cyclone ever encountered by Australia in a century, Yasi was more powerful than Hurricane Katrina which had ravaged the southern part of U.S.A. in 2005.
