(1) It was the first time that a continuous prose narrative had
been written with no other specific object than to create
the illusion of day-to-day living .Crusoe's preoccupation
with time is symptomatic of this .In previous works of
fiction there had been little attempt to establish a natural
chronological sequence.Whereas earlier authors had
mixed obvious fantasy with their fact ,Defoe was the first
to take it for granted that the storyteller's task was to
achieve as far as possible the verisimilitude of real life.
