为什么会是这样表达,按照我的理解不应该是这样的吗：they had got away with diamonds of thousands of pounds worth.

有这个固定用法,钱数+worth of +名词 意思是：相当于……价值的东西
例：
In any case,that high school has like $10 million （worth of ）computer equipment apparently in the front of it.
不管怎样,那个高中显然有值1000万美元的计算机设备.
