According to Business Wire,there are twice as many Chinese people playing Happy Farm as there are Chinese playing the popular Western game World of Warcraft.
Newsweek's Isaac Stone Fish attributes the game's popularity to "a deep and growing nostalgia for China's traditional agrarian way of lilfe'.He cites a trend in southern China that has some urban residents buying rural plots of land to farm in their free time.
Other observers say the game is popular for a more basic reason:It's fun.In fact it seems the joys of virtual farming know no bounds.An American variation of the game,called Farmville,currently ranks as one of Facebook's most popular social games.
However,all this time spent tending pixel plants has given some Chinese users pause.Pi Jiangfan,a student at Southwest Jiaotong University,reportedly recruited some classmates to help him plant a garden behind the school cafeteria.He realized they had been wasting too much time nururing virtual crops on Happy Farm.
"As soon as woke up in the morning,some students were immediately turning on their computers to plant vegetables," Pi said,according to reports."From now on ,we will only spend time on our real farm ."
