Three passions,simple but overwhelmingly（非常的,压倒性的） strong,have governed my life:the longing for love,the search for knowledge,and unbearable（难以抑制的） pity for the suffering of mankind.These passions,like great winds ,have blown me hither and thither（here and there指不同的方向）,in a wayward（刚愎的,任性的） course,over a deep ocean of anguish（痛苦）,reaching to the very verge（边缘） of despair.
I have sought（seek 的过去式,追寻寻找） love,first,because it brings ecstasy（指由爱产生的迷醉,入迷）---ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed （牺牲,献身,供奉,奉献出）all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy（幸福）.I have sought it,next,because it will relieves（缓解,减轻） loneliness---that terrible loneliness in which one shivering （战栗,震动）consciousness （心灵,内心）looks over（站在） the rim of the world into （面前是）the cold unfathomable（无底的,深不可测的） lifeless（死亡的,无生命的） abyss（深渊）.I have sought it ,finally,because in the union（结合） of love I have seen,in a mystic（神秘的） miniature（缩影,景色）,the prefiguring（预示） vision of the heaven that saints（圣人,可用同音法记忆该词） and poets have imagined（想象,向往）.This is what I sought,and though it might seem too good for human life（to get it,用的是too to 的句型要注意文中句型的省略）,this is what -at last-I have found.
With equal（同样的,平等的） passion I have sought knowledge.I have wished to understand the hearts of men.I have wished to know why the stars shine（发光,发亮）.And I have tried to apprehend（理解,领悟） the Pythagorean（毕达哥拉斯,power by which number holds sway（摆动） above the flux（变化,变量）（这句指毕达哥拉斯的数即万物）.A little of this,but not much,I have achieved.
Love and knowledge,so far as they were possibe,led upward toward the heavens.But always pity brought me back to earth.Echoes of cries of pain reverberate（回荡,凡响） in my heart.Children in famine（饥荒）,victims（受害人） tortured （折磨）by oppressors（压迫者）,helpless old people （被儿子闷当作负担的）a hated burden to their sons,and the whole world of loneliness,poverty,and pain make a mockery（嘲笑） of what human life should be.I long to alleviate（减轻） the evil,but I cannot ,and I too suffer.
This has been my life.I have found it worth living,and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.
