The Importance of letters in “Pride and Prejudice”
Abstract
Pride and Prejudice is a novel written by British woman novelist--Jane Austen,which tells about love stories of the Bennets.In the novel,Austen brings readers many vivid images through her excellent skills of description.Pride and Prejudice is a very popular novel and has been read widely all over the world.In Pride and Prejudice,Jane Austen’s usage of letters allows the reader to fully comprehend the situation and certain feelings of the characters.Letters play an important role in this novel.Because when the novel was written,letters were the only way of communicating other than through word of mouth.Letters can be used to deliver good and bad news at any time.They did not have telephones,so a letter would be the most appropriate way of keeping in touch.They can link the story because letters provide information that we would not have found out from the dialogue between the characters.We can find out extra background information what can help with the reader’s understanding of characters,the plot and the novel in general.Letters can reveal character’s personalities and character’s ideas to others.In this paper,most letter cases in this book were taken as typical examples to analyze how letter-writing was used as a dramatic device in the novel to further the plot,help with the revelation of character,reflect writing and speaking style,reveal intimate feelings and in the exposition of the theme.
