Introduction
The moisture determination via the
coulometric Karl Fischer titration
belongs to one of the most common titrations [1,2].The main advantage of this type of Karl Fischer titration is the simple handling,the rapid titration and the accuracy of the results.New reagents omitting pyridine have improved accuracy and safety of the titration.Yet,another disadvan-
tage is to overcome.Common commercial reagents contain
halogenated hydrocarbons,mostly carbon tetrachloride in the catholyte and chloroform in the anolyte.They are undesired with regard to environmental contamination,human toxicity and biodegradation.But,omitting these compounds changes the chemical character and behaviour of the reagents.The "water capacity" of the reagents drops to about one third of the usual capacity and the reagents titrate much more slowly.The reason for this electrochemical behaviour is not known.The role which the halogenated hydrocarbons play during the titration has recently been reported in two earlier publications [3,4].We decided to investigate the function of the halogenated hydrocarbons in the coulometric Karl Fischer titration.This paper reports on our investigation of the reaction in the cathode compartment.
