NewSchool of Architecture and Design Names Director of Construction Management Program
Date: 07.09.2010
Linda Thomas-Mobley Brings Academic, Engineering, Legal, Military Background
San Diego—July 09, 2010-A leader with international standing in the building industry, Linda M. Thomas-Mobley, J.D., Ph.D., will chair the Construction Management program starting this fall at NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD).

Before joining NSAD, Dr. Thomas-Mobley was a faculty member at the Georgia Institute of Technology for 13 years, serving the last three as associate chair of a building construction program. She is a civil engineer with research interests in facilities management, indoor environments and the application of American law to the construction industry. Prior to her academic career, Dr. Thomas-Mobley was construction manager for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, a senior attorney in corporate and real estate law and a lieutenant in the United States Navy Civil Engineer Corps. She holds a Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a concentration in Building Construction, a J.D. from the University of Miami and an M.S. and B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida.
“A respected professional and academic leader of Dr. Thomas-Mobley’s stature supports NewSchool’s commitment to help prepare students for professional success,” said NSAD President Dr. Steven Altman. “The fact that she frequently is invited to speak around the world, publishes widely and has led a very strong program reinforces these outcomes.”
NSAD’s four-year Bachelor of Science in Construction Management program was announced in May 2010. Emphasizing the importance of the program, George L. Welch, AIA, interim chair, said, “The future of construction management depends on well-trained women and men with total understanding of a project, from cost estimating to contract law and dozens of specialties in between.”
“Starting a construction management program at the NewSchool of Architecture and Design at this unique moment in history is a stroke of pure genius,” said Dr. Thomas-Mobley. “The construction industry is nearly five percent of the national GDP and yet hundreds of thousands of jobs remain unfilled, and owners are less than satisfied with results. The way forward is simple—boldly endow design-sensitive students with not only knowledge of how to manage the 21st-century construction project but also infuse them with a passion to lead the industry toward greater sustainability.”
