Fotang town of Yiwu municipality is widely known as a local commercial center since ancient times due to its well developed water transportation. However, today only historical records remain of its past prosperity. Protection of historical and cultural towns in China has always been a subject of considerable concern. As a city famous for commerce and trade, Yiwu is to undertake preservation of history by protecting and sustainably developing the town of Fotang, while vigorously developing modern business at the same time. This paper reviews the historical value and future prospect of the ancient town of Fotang, and by doing so provides some proposals for its further development.
