The formation of chromium nitrides was analyzed with glancing angle X-ray diffraction spectrometry using a Philips(PW3710) XRD at Korea Basic Science Institute.Cu Kα1 radiation was used as the X-ray source.The angle between the sample surface and incident X-ray beam was set at 2° and the detector scanned from 20° to 90° at increments of 0.04° per step during the analysis.A scanning rate of 0.5 s per step was used.A scanning electron microscope (JEOL,JSM-5800) was used for high-magnification imaging of the samples.Issues of interest included surface topography and cracks before and after PSII treatments.The roughness of Si-wafer implanted with nitrogen ions was measure by Atomic Force Microscopy (Digital Instruments,Nanoscope IIIa).The hardness and elastic modulus of
the samples before and after N+-PSII were measured by nanoindentation.The hardness and elastic modulus at each depth
were calculated from these curves and included elastic corrections.
The hardness and elastic modulus values were averaged for data.A ball-on-disk tribological tester was used to measure friction and the relative wear resistances of trivalent chromium plated samples before and after N+ PSII were compared.A ruby ball (3 mm in diameter) was used as a mate surface because of its high hardness and chemical inertness.Tribo-test was undertaken with an applied load of 100 g for 25 min at a sliding velocity of 6.28 m min−1 and the wear track diameter was 10 mm.The wear tracks and wound
surface of ruby balls after tribo-test were examined by laser
microscopy (Lasertec,VL2000D).
