This is a story about risk.Is has attracted me a lot.Ahab ,the hero of the story,one of his legs was eaten by Moby Dick ,a ferocious white whale.He has changed from now on,and he believes that Moby Dick is the representative of all the evil and miseries in the world.He vowed to kill it to revenge.In order to achieve his goal,Ahab didn’t regardless of the warning given by the nature and the different ideas said by sailors.This white whale is very strong,as an ordinary person,we have less hope to defeat it.But he still challenged it even though it was destined for fail.At last,Ahab and Moby Dick perished together.
Herman Melville is good at using symbols to write story and depict the characters.In this book,there are many symbols which are hard to understand and it is the important reason of the success of the story.First,let’s talk about Moby Dick.It is the enemy of Ahab.He often swims in the sea and shows his strong power,so people are afraid of him.Many people were eaten by him and harpoons can’t harm him.He swims leisurely in the sea even through there are many harpoons on his body.It is the symbol of all the evils in the world.Moby Dick is also the symbol of nature.If we continue to live by plunder the nature,we will be killed by it.Second,what’s the symbol of Captain Ahab?He and the white whale are opposites.In order to revenge,he doesn’t regardless of the life of sailors and the profit of the owner of the ship,so almost sailors died.
Ahab has become a fiend.He is more evil than the while.On the other hand,he is a man who dares to resist customs.There is s conflict between Ahab and whale for 40 years,but he will never be defeat.In a word,there are not only one symbol of Ahab,like Moby Dick,the symbols of him are multiple and incompatible.Kind and evil are all on him.
The constructions of Moby Dick depend on how to define this white whale.If Moby Dick is the symbol of evil,Ahab will be a symbol of human beings,because he dares to challenge evil and he doesn’t submit to destiny.We should learn his spirit of brave.However,if Moby Dick is the symbol of nature,Ahab will represent the dark of capitalism.He chases whale means people seize nature.Almost sailors died means nature revenge human beings.People can never conquer nature.
From this book I have learnt a lot.First,everyone is a contradictory individual.We should accept both their advantages and disadvantages.
Second,we should build an environment friendly society.Don’t seize nature.All the living beings are our friends.Third,if you have a dream,please try to achieve it and never give it up.
This is a book that young and old can read and appreciate.This is also a meaningful book.If you have spare time,I hope that you can read it.
