It was ten o’clock and I was lying in bed feeling very sleepy. I did not wake up. My mother was shouting,“Jim,get up. You are very late again.” I slowly got out of bed and stood up. I went to the bathroom, and then I saw my body in the mirror. I was very fat. I did not remember being fat. I had put on weight very quickly! After __34__,I went to the kitchen. “Here’s your favourite breakfast,” said my mother. There on the table were two hamburgers, big hamburgers. My mother was putting lots of sugar into my coffee. I understood __35__ I was fat.
After breakfast,my mother said,“Aren’t you meeting Sam in the park?” I couldn’t remember. I got my bag and walked to the park. With all my extra weight I breathed with difficulty and sweated. I opened my bag to get a tissue. I saw some cigarettes. Did I smoke? It was all very strange.

Late last night Jennifer Johnstone,a 19-year-old American student, had a quarrel with her boyfriend,so she left his house at 2:50 in the morning and drove off. She was driving in thick fog along a road in Saint Pierce when she made a mistake at a corner and went off the road. Her car fell over a 160m cliff(悬崖). Jennifer was thrown out of her car,and landed 18m from the sea. When she came to herself, she realized(意识到) that she still had her mobile phone. She dialed 911,but she did not have a clear mind,so she had to make several calls before she could finally make the ambulance(救护) people understand her. While she was waiting for help to come she could see the sea was coming closer every moment. She lay there, feeling terrified, watching and waiting. Suddenly she heard the noise of a helicopter in the sky above.
The helicopter took about half an hour to see exactly where Jennifer was,but in the end it managed to reach her. By the time the helicopter took off,the waves were just about one meter away. At last, she was sent to the nearest hospital where she is now recovering. “It was so lucky that I had my mobile phone with me,” she said to journalists,“because if I hadn’t been able to phone for help,I would surely have died.”

When you watched the animated film Shrek, did you wonder how Shrek could look, act and speak like a real human being? Let’s have a look at the making of it.
Shrek began as a simple piece of art. People drew hundreds of pictures until they found the best looking one. He had to be ugly but attractive(迷人的),a clay(粘土) model of Shrek was then made, and the model was copied on a computer.
On the computer, his body was built as if it were a human body. He had a skeleton(骨骼),and his knees and fingers could move freely.
Then it took three months to decide how he should act. Since Shrek was so heavy,he shouldn’t walk too fast. But,if he walked more slowly,he would look too old. So he was made to walk like a strong man.
After the body was built, people then started working on Shrek’s looks—his face, his skin, and his clothing. They got their ideas from everywhere. For example, the lines on Shrek’s face came from a photo of one of the persons working on it. They also copied the shape of people’s mouth to make Shrek’s mouth match his words.
Since Shrek came into being,it was time to make the story. Three minutes of animation is called a “sequence.” All the 4,320 pictures in a sequence have to be drawn by hand first. In Shrek, six people had to work on each sequence for two months. There were about 30 sequences in total(总计) and 128,000 pictures. As each sequence was finished, they put it in the right place of the movie. And when all the sequences were finished, the movie was done. Shrek took three years to complete.
51. You can replace the underlined words “animated film” with ____.
A. animal film
B. cartoon
C. Disney-made movie
D. science fiction
52. If there were only six people working on the sequences, how long would it take to finish them?
A. Two months.
B. Three months.
C. Three years.
D. About five years.
53. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Shrek is the product of high technology.
B. There were 129,600(30×4,320) pictures in total.
C. Computers played an important role in the making of Shrek.
D. You can guess what Shrek is saying from the shape of his mouth.
C
In the developing world,a million children die and millions more go blind every year because they don’t get enough vitamin A. In poor countries, nearly 20 percent of the babies die before they are born, because of their mothers’shortage(=being short of) of iron. Rice,a main food in many parts of the developing world, doesn’t provide enough of these essential(精华的) nutrients(养分).
Now researchers have found a way to enrich(=make… rich) rice with vitamin by inserting(插入) genes(基因) from other plants. By adding another gene from a French bean, the iron content(成分) of rice can be doubled. This genetically modified (GM) (转基因) rice would be ready for farmers as soon as 2003,promising to save millions of lives in poor countries.
Products of agricultural genetic engineering today include crops that are disease and insect resistant, fruits that stay fresh longer, and cow hormones that can increase milk production. Advances in the works include foods that have been modified to fight some diseases.
But many environmental and health activist groups are strongly against the GM technology. Greenpeace calls GM food “biological pollution.” Many countries are also against GM foods, such as the U. S.,Brazil,Japan and so on. Europe, where GM crops have been banned(禁止) since April 1998,is strongly against the GM foods. The European Union is also pushing for strict controls(控制) for buying GM foods from other countries. Much opposition(反对) to GM foods is based on the fear that “natural” plants could be forever changed—perhaps for the worse. They are also afraid that people and animals that eat GM food could develop health problems.
Are GM foods any more or a risk(冒险) than other agricultural innovations(创新) that have taken place over the year? Do the existing and future benefits of GM foods outweigh any risks that do exist? And what standard(标准) should governments use when judging(评判) the safety of GM crops? The environmental groups favour the “precautionary principle,”(预防原则) which calls for governments to ban any activity that raises worry about human health or the environment, even if some cause-and-effect relationships are not fully proved scientifically. As Norman Baker said: “We must always use the precautionary principle. That says that unless you’re sure of enough control, unless you’re sure the risk is minimal(最小的),unless you’re sure nothing horrible can go wrong, you don’t do it.”
But can any innovation ever meet such a standard of certainty? And what about those millions of poor people whose lives could be saved by GM foods? Perhaps the “precautionary principle” isn’t so precautionary after all.
54. Why do millions of children die or go blind, and babies die before birth?
A. Because their mothers are short of iron.
B. Because they don’t have enough vitamin A.
C. Because their countries are poor and belong to the developing world.
D. Because the main food rice doesn’t contain enough of the essential nutrients.
55. Which of the following products of agricultural genetic engineering is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Crops that are disease and insect resistant.
B. Cow hormones that lead to increased milk production.
C. Foods that are modified to avoid common diseases.
D. GM fruit that can stay fresh longer than other fruit.
56. Greenpeace is _____.
A. a country which doesn’t allow GM crops to grow in
B. environmental and health activist group which opposes GM technology
C. a country which calls GM food “biological pollution”
D. a person who is strongly against GM foods
