Saving the little birds(①)
One day in spring, three men were riding horses on a road. These men were all lawyers. It was raining all the time.
The three lawyers rode along and they talked a lot. They had a really good time. When they went past some small trees, they heard a greatfluttering over their heads and "cheep!cheep!cheep!"from the grass."What is the matter here?"asked the first lawyer. His name was Speed."Oh,it's only some old birds!"said the second lawyer. His name wasHardin."The little birds fell from their nest. They can't fly and so just stay in the grass. The mother bird is very sad."
"Oh,"well! They're nothing but birds,"said Mr Hardin. Why not talk about something else?"
"Yes,that's a good idea!"said Mr speed.
The two men, when they went by,looked down and saw the little birds fluttering in the cold grass. They saw the mother bird flying about.
They rode on and didn't talk about birds any more. But the third lawyer, whose name was Abraham Lincoln, just got down from his horse and picked the little birds up in his big warm hand.
Saving the little birds(②)
Looking at the little birds,Mr Lincoln said,"Never mind,my little friends.I will put you in you own little bed.
Then Mr Lincoln found the nest in a tree above the guass. He climbed up the tree and put the birds into their warm home. The mother bird was happy to see her kids come back.
The two lawyers went on their way."Where is Lincoln?"asked one."He must have gone to help the little birds,"said Mr Speed.
Soon,Mr Lincoln joined them. His shoes were covered with mud."Hello,Abraham!"said Mr Hardin."Where have you been?"
"I went to give the little birds to their mother,"he answered.
"Well,we always thought you were a gread man,"said Mr speed."Now we know it."
Then the two men were happy. They thought it so foolish that a strong man should take so much time just for some little birds.
"Oh,my firends"said Mr Lincoln,"I could not have a good sleep if I don't help the little birds in the grass."
Abraham Lincoln afterwards became president of the U.S.A.He was one of the greatest Americans.
