A simplified example of one possible approach to using the RRT should illustrate its benefits.Let's assume business executives are to be asked a number of sensitive questions relating to ethical behavior, and each question calls for either a 'yes' or 'no' response. An executive who is guilty of having committed an unethical act might not be willing to admit that fact to a researcher. To deal with this problem, the executive could be instructed to
privately flip a coin before considering each question. The executive is told to answer the posed question truthfully with a 'yes' or 'no' response if the coin lands on 'heads'.On the other hand he or she is directed to answer 'yes',regardless of whether 'yes' is a truthful response or not,if the coin falls on 'tails'.The researcher never knows for sure whether a 'yes' answer indicates an affirmative response to the research question or whether it simply indicates the coin fell on 'tails'.In this way the subject is assured of confidentiality.By using probability concepts relating to coin flips, however, the researcher is able
to obtain needed information - albeit approximations- concerning the respondent group (but still knows nothing about any particular executive's responses).
