我知道答案是A,但能否解释一下这句话的意思?另外whom在此句中做什么成分?为什么不用them?Them似乎也说的通啊

从句还原不是we spent on the small island in the days,为什么不用when引导呢?

1 这句话意思是大约有2000人在这个项目中工作,他们中的许多人曾经失业.英语中一句话只能有一个动词.如果是them,原句就应该是两句话了：About 2000 people worked on the project.Many of them were those who had been out of work.代词Many 成了第二句的主语.否则一句话里就有worked和were两个动词了.
whom 在这里指代前面的people,本来因该是who were those who had...但是前面有了个many of,介词of 后面跟宾格,就是who了.
2 从句还原错了.应该是we spent the days on the island.Spend是及物动词,days 是宾语.所以是that不是when 也不是on which.
