The following new seal requirement for all sea containers in transit to the United States has been published in the Federal Register:U.S.Customs & Border Protection (CBP) Trade Information Notice 08-21,“Federal Register Notice Seal Mandate,Effective October 15,2008.” This new seal statute requires sea containers to be sealed with an ISO/PAS 17712,Freight Containers- Mechanical Seals and is effective for containers arriving on or after October 15th,2008.Exemptions apply to tanks,non-standard containers (such as open top containers),and those containers incapable of being affixed with a seal.CBP plans to ensure compliance with this requirement as part of normal seaport container inspection activities and may assess civil penalties for non compliance.Please verify vendors are aware of this seal requirement.
