There are 18 different kinds of penguins.They all live around Antarctica which is a land covered in ice and snow.Penguins cannot fly,but they are excellent swimmers.They are seabirds.
The penguins spend most of the summer in the water.They come ashore to breed.They take their long journey across the ice to lay eggs each year.The female lays one large egg.Then she treks back to sea to find food.The male guards the egg.He keeps it warm on his feet under a flap of skin.Two months later,the eggs hatch.The mother return from the sea to care for the dickeybird.Penguin babies are covered in downy gray feathers.After a few weeks,they are too big to sit on their mother's feet.They are fed with half-eaten fish brought by their parents.They grow up in large groups watched over by adult penguins.
As summer draws near,the young birds are ready to swim.They dive in for the first time.Next year,if they live,they will return here to mate and breed.
