I personally don't have a problem with learning English but sometimes I do question myself why 1/5 of the population are so required to learn a foreign language in their education career in modern Chinese society. Reductions of language barrier surely improves trading efficiency; however, the problem isn't really about if it helps but if it is necessary to require all students to learn. Chinese is our native language as much as English is their native language. But somehow I just feel it unfair and wonder why those English-speaking-country students are not required to take Chinese courses. We, as Chinese, might be a little or a lot behind in economy, but we are not cheap. Maybe those students from other countries aren't smart enough to be capable of learning a second language, whereas Chinese students don't feel bothered. But even in this point, we should still have the right to choose. Today, we are cutting many of Chinese dialects, not knowing why though, we are required to learn English. That is the education system in China. All graduated students try as much as they can to enter a foreign company being proud of working as a white-collar. It's a universal symbol of success to them. Suppose taking the advantage of speaking fluent English, all college or university students have the success and work in a foreign company, we don't have our own industries anymore. Then our country is dead. And all of us will be labelled as "slaves." The market labour prices, as too many skillful workers in the labour pool, will decrease. And sadly, this is what the necessity of learning English is leading us to.
