A newly released report on Chinese banks' competitiveness shows a better than expected performance.The positive evaluation comes despite the world's financial system taking a battering.
The report evaluates Chinese commercial banks' performance in 2008,while taking into consideration their latest developments.Last year the banks all achieved their capital adequacy ratio.
Non-performing assets continued to decline,and profitability was better than expected.Except for the Shenzhen Development Bank,the ratio of loans to savings of the other 16 national banks were all under the 75 percent red line.
The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China,the Bank of Communications,and the Bank of Construction ranked in the top 3 for core competitiveness.The Merchant's Bank,the Bank of Construction and the Bank of Communications claimed the first 3 places in terms of financial evaluation.The best 3 city commercial banks are the Bank of Hangzhou,the Bank of Nanjing and the Laishang Bank.
Wang Songqi,Deputy Director,Financial Institute,CASS,said,"I think the report on Chinese commercial banks' competitiveness shows their overall development and profitability is far better than expected.We feared that an easy monetary policy and low interest rates would affect their performance.But they are doing much better than expected."
The report also reflects the continuing reforms in China's banking sector.These include increased marketalization of the financial sector,and a diversified bank structure,including national banks,regional banks and local banks.
