INTRODUCTION
The PC based virtual instrumentation is a dynamic and attractive to the classic instrumentation.Its main advantages are:flexibility and adaptability (it can be easily expanded and reconfigured for different applications),low cost,wide development of extension PC boards with measurements features,attractive representation of measurement results,in different forms,on the PC’s monitor.There are several typical areas for PC based instrumentation such as:data acquisition and analysis,signal monitoring,automatic testing,quality assurance,education,etc.
Important achievements for educational purposes are reported in the literature.Many companies produce virtual instrumentation and many projects are developed in various universities to provide higher level and lower cost solutions for laboratory component of courses on instrumentation and measurement.A virtual instrumentation system is made of two components:a software part,usually based on Matlab or LabVIEW,and a hardware platform which is implemented by a PC extension board.The integrated measurement tool presented in relies on Matlab as a software component running on a DSP based system as hardware platform.Reference describes another approach,namely the inclusion of hardware and software measurements features into processor architecture.The approach and results are described using a Xilinx device with a MicroBlazeTM 32 bit architecture.The concept of RTNI (Real Time Non-Intrusive) instrumentation was applied to embedded systems.In another virtual instrumentation system is presented.The programs were written using National Instruments data acquisition hardware interface.
The present paper describes an educational PC based (virtual) instrumentation application for system identification.The virtual system is made of an external board,connected to the PC via the USB interface,a software tool,Agilent VEE (Visual Engineering Environment) and the software application.Agilent VEE is a visual tool used especially in measurement instruments and data processing and analysis applications.It offers help for configuring the instrumentation,developing user interfaces and simplifies the creation of needed applications.Agilent VEE offers support ActiveXControls increasing the applications functionalities.The presented virtual system can work as a voltmeter,ammeter,signal generator,digital oscilloscope and power supply.It was foresight with Internet and LAN capabilities.
