　　Nine pieces of art were recently stolen from the Palace Museum in Beijing’s Forbidden City.Although the police caught the suspect within 58 hours,the theft has been considered as “a big loss of face” for the museum and drawn strong criticism from across the country.
　　This theft is the first break-in at the Forbidden City for over twenty years.Around 30 million yuan worth of art pieces were stolen.Nine missing items,mostly Western-style make-up boxes made of gold and jewels,were all borrowed from a Hong Kong museum for a short-term exhibition in the Palace Museum.Despite the nine items being found and brought back,all were slightly damaged.
　　“This case shows us that all security systems are tools.We still need to depend on people who operate the system.Obviously,however,we failed to do that.We are very sorry about the theft,” said Ma Jige,a leader of the museum.He stood up and bowed to the public in a show of regret during a press conference.
　　As the home of many Chinese emperors in ancient times,the Forbidden City houses thousands of valuable art pieces,including ancient books,paintings and jewels.Ma promised that the museum would find out a way to better protect all the art pieces as soon as possible.
