Toluene (BDH) was predried over 4-A˚ molecular sieves and distilled from sodium benzophenone
ketyl immediately prior to use.Dichloromethane
(DCM) was distilled from calcium hydride before
use.All other chemicals were purchased from
Aldrich and used as received without further
purification.N,N0-di(n-butyl)-1,6,7,12-tetrakis(4-
tert-butylphenoxy)-3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic
bisimide was prepared according to the
methods described in the literature.4-Ethynylbenzonic
acid was synthesized by palladiumcatalyzed
coupling reaction of trimethylsilylacetylene
with methyl 4-bromobenzoate followed by
base-catalyzed desilylation.11-Phthalimido-1-
phenyl-1-undecyne,poly(11-phthalimido-1-
phenyl-1-undecyne) (P8; Mw 22,700; Mw/Mn 1.5),
and poly(11-amino-1-phenyl-1-undecyne) (P11;
Mw 11,500; Mw/Mn 1.4) were prepared according
to our previous article.
Instrumentation
IR spectra were measured on a Perkin–Elmer 16
PC FT-IR spectrophotometer.1H and 13C NMR
spectra were recorded on a Bruker ARX 300
NMR spectrometer using chloroform-d as solvent
and tetramethylsilane as internal reference.
UV spectra were measured on a Milton Roy
Spectronic 3000 Array spectrophotometer.Mass
spectra were recorded on a Finnigan TSQ 7000
triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer operating
in a chemical ionization (CI) mode with methane
as carrier gas.Molecular weights and polydispersity
indices of the polymers were estimated in
THF by a Waters Associate gel permeation chromatography
(GPC) system.A set of monodisperse
polystyrene standards covering molecular weight
range of 103–107 was used for molecular weight
calibration.Thermal stability of the polymers
was evaluated on a Perkin-Elmer TGA 7 under
dry nitrogen at a heating rate of 20 8C/min.Photoluminescence
(PL) spectra of the polymers in
THF were recorded on a Perkin–Elmer LS55
spectrofluorometer.PL quantum yields (FF) of
the polymers in DCM were determined using a
method described in the literature.50 Compound
4 was used as standard,and its FF was assumed
to be 100% in DCM.51 Time-correlated singlephoton
counting fluorescence studies were performed
using an Edinburgh FL900 spectrometer at excitation and emission wavelengths of 370
and 610 nm,respectively.
