Language translation and language localization have some points in common,but there is a fundamental difference between the two.
Translation is the process of expressing the meaning contained in the source language into the target language,in which the original language is the source of all meanings to be carried on the target language.In other words,the original language plays a leading role in translation.But in language localization,the target language should take the lead because the purpose of localization is delivered to the information to a local audience.
For instance,if there is an article in English to be “translated” into Chinese,then the translator should follow the style and mindset of the author of the original text.The translator is not supposed to add or delete information in the translated version,even though the translated version may prove a little bit hard to read for a Chinese reader.However,in localization,the translator,or the localization project undertaker,may have freedom to add or delete information of the original text to make the localized suitable for local audience.In general,localization is more of translation plus creation,while translation is,plainly,translation.
In my view,localization will be the future way of transferring information between different languages because localization offers more for local audience than translation.
