题目:It is better for children to grow up in the countryside than in a big city. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to develop your essay.
正文:
People’s impression about countryside usually turns out to be peaceful and picturesque. Birds sing in the forests in the mountains; vast farmlands stretch out the huge plains; happy farmers and their cattle whistle along the winding paths beside the tranquil lakes… It seems that countryside is a nice place to stay in, but this does not necessarily mean that it is a good place for bringing up a child. In fact, it is better for children to grow up in a metropolis rather than in the countryside.
First of all, the residential density in large cities is usually greater than that in the countryside. If a child is brought up in a big city, then he will get to know more people in the neighborhood. Therefore, he will have more chance to communicate to people. His language abilities will thus begin to develop earlier than other kids of the same age. I was brought up in a densely resided neighborhood in a big city. Since lots of my neighbors love talking to me and playing with me, I learned to talk at an early age. I was able to handle my mother-tongue much more skillfully than my peers when I was two years old; when I became a schoolgirl, I did much better in language subjects than my classmates. In comparison, my cousin, who has grown up in the countryside where he had less chance to talk to people in his childhood, does not do as well as I in language courses and sometimes is unconfident when talking to people. This clearly indicates that living in big cities can do a lot of good to the development of a child’s language abilities.
Secondly, children that are brought up in cities usually have more spare time. Since large cities usually possess a well-functioned transportation system, children that live in large cities need not spend too much time on their way to school, which means they can spend more time on schoolwork and extracurricular activities. They will have plenty of time to join in school club activities or having sports. However, children that live in the countryside have to spend a long time on the way to school, even if they take a shuttle-bus. They will, comparatively, have less spare time than those children from large cities.
Some people may argue that the beautiful scenery of the countryside will help children develop love and curiosity for nature and a sense of environment protection. However, large cities are usually equipped with nice parks with various types of plants and animals. By visiting the parks frequently, children that live in large cities will also learn to be concerned about the nature. Meanwhile, they can learn about more species of creatures in the well-designed parks of cities, which offers them a better understanding of the nature.
To sum up, it is better for children to grow up in cities instead of the countryside. The children that have grown up in large cities will be capable of combating the upcoming challenges and will have a promising future.
