(3)The University of London is a nonsectarian,co-educational,government-supported institution,located in London,England.It was founded in 1836 to meet the needs of a growing middle class who desired nonsectarian education in the arts,science,or medicine.Up to that time,the existing universities of England had confined the awarding degrees generally to the members of the Church of England,and little emphasis had been placed on curriculum unrelated to theological studies.The university functioned as an examining body for other educational institutions until 1900 when it was reconstituted as a teaching as well as an examining institution.A distinctive feature of the university is its recognition or accreditation of a number of individual teachers in certain educational institutions not otherwise connected with the university with whom students may follow courses of instruction leading to a degree from the University of London.Today the institution is a vast system of colleges,institutes,and schools scattered throughout London and its environments.The main university center is located in the Bloomsbury section of London,near the British museum.The present faculties include those of arts,economics and political science,and theology.The main university library contains over 800 000 volumes with a special collection of Shakespeare and Elizabethan literature.Each school or institute also has its own library.
