Cancun provides the ideal context for examining tourist consumption and preferences by nationality and type of tourist.In the 1960s the uninhabited barrier island,located in the isolated Quintana Roo tropical forest enclave,was selected by the Mexican government as the site for the 1rst master planned resort – the cornerstone of a new externally orientated national economic development strategy based on Planned Tourism Development (PTD).Today Cancun is Mexico’s leading tourist destination (Mexican Government Tourism Office 2000),receiving millions of middle-class,‘sun-and-sand’ tourists on package tours every year.Whilst the objective of creating linkages to local agriculture was included amongst the original aims of the Cancun project (Enriquez Savignac 1972),there have been few concerted efforts to stimulate local production for tourism markets,and linkages remain virtually non-existent for most products (Torres 2003).
At its surface Cancun appears to be the archetype of a Fordist mass tourism resort.A closer look at Cancun,and the surrounding region’s tourism industry,reveals a more complex and diversified tourism landscape with various shades of mass tourism existing along with more alternative forms of post-Fordist tourism such as ecotourism,archaeological tourism,sporting tourism and ethnic tourism,among others (Torres 2002).With respect to nationality,American tourists predominate,comprising nearly 60 percent of visitors (Asociación de Hoteles de Cancun 1996).These unique characteristics of the Yucatan tourism industry enable comparisons between the consumption patterns of Americans and non- Americans,as well as ‘mass’ and ‘off-beat’ tourists.
