基本上用于：
1-实现某种功能的技术.例：电子管、晶体管、集成电路之于电子计算机.电子计算机之于自动控制.软件之于硬件.
2-使人具备某种本领、给予人某种便利的技术.例：互联网之于电子商务.数字技术之于电影特技.基因技术之于生物开发.
Enabling technology,促成科技,让目的与方法之间没有距离.“促成”（enabling）是一个重要的概念,意指“可以达成目的”.促成科技可以让原本独立的构成要素（components）,开始进行互动.例如,原本系统不相容的电脑,可以透过中介软体（middleware）,达成资源共享的目的.
