Adelaide,the capital of South Australia,is one of Australia’s
best-planned cities.The city was laid out with broad streets in an open grid pattern,and over 4000ha of parklands encircling the city were preserved.To the west the city faces Gulf St.Vincent,with broad sandy beaches lining the coastline.To the east the Mount Lofty ranges from an impressive backdrop,with Mount Lofty(727m) the highest peak.The southern part of the city is the main business section of the city.Belts of parklands line three sides of the area and four large open squares of lawns and trees break the regularity of the city buildings.North Adelaide,which is chiefly residential,is bordered by more parklands,and contains two open squares.N and S Adelaide are divided by the Torrens River,spanned by four bridges and lined with ornamental gardens.
The city contains many fine examples of early Australian architecture,including the town hall on King William Street—the wide main N-S thoroughfare.Built from designs by E.W.Wright,a former mayor of the city,the town hall’s foundation stone was laid in 1863.
Adelaide contains many statues and seven fountains.The most spectacular fountain,completed in 1968,is in Victoria Square,the centre of the city’s business section.Its three-sided design,with 34 jets of water and aluminium sculptures,represents the three rivers from which Adelaide draws its water—the Murray,the Torrens and the Onkaparinga.Parklands,which separate the city and the suburbs,are preserved in perpetuity for the use of the people.
From 1960,when the first Adelaide Festival of Arts was held,Adelaide gained a reputation as Australia’s cultural centre.As an artistic event,a stimulus to the creative and performing arts in Australia,the Festival has introduced many world-famous artists to millions of Australians.
