在中国人际交往中，香烟并不仅仅是一种特殊的嗜好品。有句俗语概括的非常精辟：“烟是桥，酒是路。”可见香烟对于中国老百姓的意义。所以很多人抽烟其实不完全是自己个人的喜好，其中还包括所谓的“面子”、礼节、客套、应酬等等复杂的因素。
当然，香烟也不完全是礼节性的。
目前，全球吸烟人口已达到15亿人左右。而根据今年7月召开的世界卫生经济大会上提供的数据，我国现在十五岁以上的吸烟者达到3.5亿，超过中国总人口的四分之一，占世界吸烟总人口的近1/3。
