Can you imagine spending nine months with no one except yourself and the occasional dolphin for company?And during that time,only being able to sleep for less than an hour at a time?That is what 16-year-old Mike Perham from England experienced when he embarked on a solo “Round the World” sailing trip last November.
Mike set off from Portsmouth (英国朴茨茅斯),England on November 15,2008.And after sailing almost 30,000 miles,he returned triumphantly on August 29,2009,to become the youngest person ever to accomplish the feat.Of course this trip was a huge adventure for the teen!It was also filled with danger,strong winds,50-foot waves and technical problems which hampered the voyage.
As a student at a sports college in London,Mike had to take time off from his studies in order to make the trip.He started sailing at 7 years old.At age 14,he became the youngest person to sail the Atlantic Ocean* single-handed.His boat,a 50-foot long ocean racer,“Totalmoney.com,” has already proven its worth in all sorts of weather conditions.Mike’s route took him from the vast oceans of the Northern Hemisphere to the freezing temperatures and strong winds of the Southern Hemisphere,a very cold journey.
Just think,day and night,being solely responsible for that boat!I wonder how scared he got.Mike was actually tied onto the boat at all times,to stop from being washed away!
