The poet’s ability to create pictures in the mind has been described very well by Herbert Read, a man who has spent much of his life studying and writing about poetry and other fields of art.
…The delight which poetry gives us is due to its music and magic, but music and magic are inspired by what the poet sees – more particularly by what he sees with his “inward eye.” This is the eye of the imagination. What it sees are “images” – pictures held in the mind. But though the outward eye has always to look at the real world to find an image, the inward eye has a private store of them. All the things we have seen in the past, and which are no longer visible, are filed away in the memory like microfilms, some near the surface, some buried so deeply that we have forgotten them. When a poet is writing, his inward eye is searching through this store of images, sweeping through it with a beam like a searchlight, and stopping immediately when he has found what he needs to illustrate his thought or feeling…

The poet’s ability to create pictures in the mind has been described very well by Herbert Read, a man who has spent much of his life studying and writing about poetry and other fields of art.

The delight which poetry gives us is due to its music and magic, but music and magic are inspired by what the poet sees – more particularly by what he sees with his “inward eye.” This is the eye of the imagination.
