Several surveys have indicated that the computerization of business logistics activities has been widely acclaimed and accepted.IT is playing an important role in supporting logistics functions because its capabilities have a significant influence on the overall competence of logistics.IT has become an indispensable tool for logistics management,providing support in various forms including word processing,spreadsheet accounts and database files.More recently,IT in the form of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) has been introduced to help companies exchange commercial documents such as invoices between business partners without human intervention,using structured,agreed-upon national and international message standards.Today,modern logistics management relies heavily on access to accurate and timely information.However,logistics managers frequently do not have the information they truly need to make effective decisions,or much of the information that is available to logistics managers is of exceedingly poor quality.
Therefore,there is a great demand for the development of LIS into valuable organizational resources that can provide quality logistics information.A survey has shown that the use of LIS has increased in many logistics companies.In fact,various studies on LIS have been conducted and have come up with useful findings.Bardi et al.presented a study examining factors that affect the support of top management for an LIS.They showed that companies with a high level of top management support have more advanced LIS.Meanwhile,such companies tend to proactively use LIS to monitor and control customer backorders,and to make strategic decisions to improve operational efficiency and competitiveness.Closs et al.offered empirical evidence to support the postulation that LIS capabilities can significantly enhance overall competence in logistics.Specifically,overall logistics competence is primarily influenced by timeliness in logistics operations,usage-driven formatting and flexibility.Rutner et al.provided more up-to-date findings on the levels of LIS integration.While the current levels of LIS integration still fall short of full integration,the greatest improvement over that last 25 years has been found in transportation management,where automation levels have significantly increased.
In addition to the studies on the usage rates of LIS tools,some research on LIS infrastructure and development has been undertaken.However,from our extensive review of the literature,we found that little research has been done on the adoption of LIS.It is evident that the adoption of an LIS is critical to the success oflogistics operations and management.
