On July 22,2009,millions of people in China had front row seats to a total solar eclipse with the longest period of totality in this century.It lasted 6 minutes and 39 seconds.Many people saw a total eclipse of the sun for the first time.
The moon coming between the sun and the earth causes a solar eclipse.The shadow of the moon makes parts of the earth grow darker during the daytime.It is magical that it suddenly gets as dark as nighttime and then gets light again in a few minutes.
There are two parts of an eclipse.The first is the penumbra shadow.Partial eclipses can be seen in this lighter shadow area.The true dark area of an eclipse is called the umbra,and it only lasts for a few minutes on any one part of the earth’s surface.It is also called the path of totality.This path of the eclipse is usually 16,000km long but only 150km wide.During a total solar eclipse,you can see the corona,the diamond ring and so on.
Looking at a solar eclipse with just our eyes or common sunglasses can be very dangerous.The light from the sun is so bright that it can burn your eyes or even cause blindness.You must only use special equipment to view a solar eclipse.You can also project the image of the eclipse into a box through a small hole.Viewing a solar eclipse is a very special event.It can be a good start for you to get interested in science and the natural world.
