When students are studying poetry, it’s
very important for them to get a feel for the rhythms and sounds of poems —more
so than for most pieces of prose(散文). This isn’t always easy in a second language, but
listening to the teacher read the poem, or to a professional recording, perhaps
by a poet or an actor, can be very helpful.

As with any listening activity, students will need some kind of preparation so
as to become actively engaged. They might be asked to check predictions made
during a warm-up discussion, to compare rhyming couplets(韵律)they produced with the poet’s, or
to identify stressed words and syllables (音节).

You might also want to get your students to listen to recorded or live
discussions about poems. This can take the form of a couple of teachers or a group
of students giving their views on a poem, or of an interview with the poet.

Information gap activities are often very popular with students, and help them
take an active part in listening. For such an activity you might like to:
◆divide your students into two, or eventhree groups.
◆give each group a different cassette orCD, and a different task to work on.
◆have them share with the class what they
have learned when they’ve finished.

Remember that your own enthusiasm is a key factor in any activity related to
literature.

Finally, don’t forget to encourage art for art’s sake. Listening for pleasure
to poetry (or to anything else, for that matter) motivates students, and
encourages them to master new vocabulary. Many good song lyrics are a kind of
poetry, and can be treated accordingly in the classroom, copyright lawspermitting.
