Dad used to smoke heavily,about one pack a day.Mom and I didn’t like the smoke in the room,or even the smell about him.Mom looked worried when she heard Dad cough frequently.We tried all sorts of ways to help him quit smoking.But nothing could make him stop.So we had to do something special.
One day,I was caught smoking at school.“How dare you!” Dad shouted at me.“Well,I used to hate smoking.But because I love you,I wanted to understand you better.So I tried your cigarette once or twice,and I have come to like the smell.Now I’m used to it.It makes me feel cool.” Dad was speechless.After a whole minute,he said,“But you are still a student and a girl…”
“Look here in the newspaper.It says one out of five students in our city has smoked cigarettes.And 15 percent of the teachers in high schools smoke.Why not let me have a try?”
“Smoking is bad for your health,” Dad said seriously.“It will also harm your mental development.”
“Yeah,know.But according to the newspaper,one out of ten cases of lung cancer is caused by second-hand smoke,” I said ,as seriously as he did.…
Now I have given up smoking (Of course ,I never really enjoyed it ).Dad didn’t make me stop.He simply threw away his cigarettes and doesn’t smoke anymore.
