关于喀纳斯湖,当地牧民中流传着很多关于“湖怪”的传说,说养的牛掉到湖里就被“湖怪”吃了.1985年8月11日,《新疆日报》在头版头条位置刊出一条引人注目的消息：“喀纳斯湖发现巨型大红鱼.鱼头宽度在一米以上,鱼体长约10至15米,体重超过4吨……”
1987年,一支科学考察队进入喀纳斯湖探索“湖怪”之谜.经过两年考察,发现了一群由三四十条大红鱼组成的声势浩大的鱼群,每条鱼长约为三四米.考察队后来宣布,喀纳斯“湖怪”之谜已被揭开,被称为“湖怪”的大红鱼就是巨型哲罗鲑鱼.
其实,哲罗鲑和大红鱼是同一种鱼类.哲罗鲑是北方一种珍稀的冷水型食肉鱼类,生性凶猛,常年隐没在水中.繁殖季节鱼体呈红褐色,所以也有大红鱼之称.这种鱼体形狭长,头部扁平,满嘴都是锋利的牙齿,食物一旦被咬住,很难逃脱.研究表明,巨型哲罗鲑的重量约在2至3吨之间,常吞食浮游水面的野鸭等水禽,也吃湖中的水獭、大水鼠等.
