It is reported that education authorities in Beijing,Shandong and Jiangsu provinces have declared to carry out reforms of gaokao,or College Entrance Exam .It is notable that these reforms share something in common:planning to reduce English testing scores in overall admissions test scores.Beijing has gone the furthest among all the reformers.Starting in 2016,the points for English as a main tested subject of the Beijing gaokao will drop from the current 150 to 100.
Officials have considered the reforms as both a practical decision and a matter of national pride.“The change emphasizes the fundamental importance of mather tongue in the curriculum,”a representative from the commission told Xinhua.Some educators call the reforms“no more than a minor adjustment”,saying that they would change the way that English is taught without reducing its importance.
The reform has been greeted differently by students.After interviewing a few local students,the Beijing News reported on Tuesday that students who excal at English consider it as a blow to their competitive strengths.Those who view English as their weakness welcome it in terms of how the test is taken.
