湖南湘阴（今汩罗）人。原名成业，又名君茉。1934年开始散文创作，发表第一篇散文《热南山地居民生活素描》。1936年加入中国共产党。曾任冀中区妇救会宣传部部长，《黎明报》、《晋察冀日报》、《人民日报》编辑及副刊主编。
1949年5月，任北京市妇联宣传部副部长。1950年，发表描写抗日战争的中篇小说《苇塘记事》。1956年创作出版长篇小说《青春之歌》，并被译成英、法、德、俄、日、朝鲜等10多种文字，累计发行500万册，成为新中国印刷逾百万册的佳作。1959年9月，又将《青春之歌》改编成电影，在庆祝建国10周年“国产新片展览月”中上映，成为最优秀的影片之一，对几代青年产生了良好影响。1963年调北京市文联从事专业创作，先后任作协北京分会副主席，北京市文联副主席、主席。是中国作协理事、主席团成员，全国人大第五届常委。创作有长篇小说《青春之歌》、《东方欲晓》，出版有《杨沫小说选》、《杨沫散文选》、《杨沫文集》（7卷本）。
