During this period 是时间状语,all the students 是句子的主语部分,谓语动词其实是系动词were.在这个句子,是主-系-表结构的.只不过表语用的是过去进行时,表示正在发生的动作.participating是participate的ing形式,是动词,修饰动词使用副词,active是形容词,它的副词是actively.所以原句错了.
